How Do I Get a Home?

7/24/2026

A guide to claiming your first home in Tamriel, and every roof worth owning after that.

Now listen well, traveler, for every hero's tale needs a place to hang their blade come nightfall! Whether you dream of a humble cot or a manor grand enough to make a king weep with envy, the path to a roof of your own is shorter than you'd reckon. Two roads lie before you: march into the Crown Store and take your pick of any furnished or unfurnished home that steals your fancy, or prove your mettle through the tutorial quest known as "A Room to Spare," and earn yourself a free inn room for your troubles.

Starting the Quest

Ha! The fates smile upon the new adventurer, for this quest can be claimed no fewer than four ways. Take whichever path calls to you:

  • Wander into the Crown Store and seek the "Quest Starters" tab. There it sits, free as the wind, asking nothing of you.
  • Rifle through the bank coffers in any major non-DLC city. Somewhere in that clutter waits the Housing Brochure, and the moment you lay hands on it, the quest is yours.
  • Simply live long enough to reach level 18! The "Room to Spare" Housing Brochure falls into your pack all on its own, a reward for surviving this long.
  • Or seek out the quest-giver herself, Felande Demarie, who waits patiently in the starter towns of each alliance and the great cities of the Chapter zones, ready to press a set of keys into the hand of any worthy soul.

But heed this warning, brave one: if you go searching for Felande, you must find her in the lands of your own alliance. Wander into a stranger's territory and she'll turn you away, no room for outsiders here!

Ready for More?

Quest done, deed secured, ahh, home sweet home! But why stop at just one roof, when the whole of Tamriel has so many to offer? Aye, some collectors among us own every last home in the realm, and there's no shame in such ambition. From here the road forks two ways: spend your crowns in the Crown Store, or dig deep into your coin purse for good honest gold.

What Kind of Homes Are There?

Inn Rooms

Every tale of homeownership begins the same humble way, in a cramped little inn room with a lumpy mattress and a view of absolutely nothing. And yet, what promise it holds! There's a room to be had for every alliance, tucked into great cities like Vivec City, Alinor, Rimmen, Solitude, Leyawiin, Gonfalon, and Necrom. Finish "A Room to Spare" and the first is yours at no cost at all. Fancy yourself a collector? Further rooms will cost you 3,000 gold each, though I'll warn you, no innkeeper in Tamriel accepts crowns for these.

Apartments

Grown tired of that lumpy inn bed? Then it's time to spread your wings, friend. An apartment offers room enough to breathe, still modest, mind you, but a fine step up all the same. Three such homes exist, one for each alliance, and they'll cost between 11,000 and 13,000 gold unfurnished. Mind you, the quest must be finished first. No shortcuts on this road.

Small, Medium, and Large Homes

Ahh, now here's where the real tale begins! Once you've outgrown apartment living, a whole world of houses opens before you. The small ones keep company with the Staple Homes, while medium and large join their grander Classic cousins. Not a one is alike, mind you, some echo the craft of Tamriel's ten proud races, others borrow from the stone and timber of far-off regions, and a rare few draw from stranger places still, the ancient halls of the Dwemer, or, aye, even the twisted realms of Oblivion itself! A landlord in Oblivion? Now there's a tale I'd pay good coin to hear.

Manors

But if it's true glory you seek, friend, then set your sights on the manors. These grand Notable Homes are the very pinnacle of Tamriel splendor, the sort of place that leaves your whole guild gawking at the door. One stands ready for each alliance. Claim one and you'll earn a title and achievement worthy of song, and claim all three, well, that's a boast for the ages. But be warned, each manor guards itself behind a trial most fierce, an achievement not easily won. Best sharpen your blade before you come knocking.

Unique Crown Store Homes

And now and then, travelers, something truly wondrous drifts through the Crown Store, homes found nowhere else in all the realm! I speak of places like Earthtear Cavern, the Grand Topal Hideaway, or Fair Winds, a home upon the very deck of a sailing ship, for why settle for four walls when the open sea will do? Most such treasures fall among the Notable homes, sharing the same limits as their kin. So keep your coin purse ready and your eyes on the Crown Store, for you never know what marvel might sail in next!
